What IndexNow Actually Does for AI Search

    November 7, 2026Untethered Minds Media
    Quick Answer

IndexNow tells a search engine the moment a page changes, instead of waiting on the next crawl. Google does not read it. Bing does, and Bing feeds Copilot and other AI tools that pull its live results.

IndexNow tells a search engine the moment a page changes, instead of waiting for the engine to notice on its own.

Most sites never ping it. They let the next crawl carry whatever changed, whenever that crawl happens to land. For a site that rarely updates, the wait barely registers. For a site correcting something wrong, a price, a closed location, a discontinued service, the wait is the actual problem.

Our post on what a sitemap tells an AI crawler covers the lastmod field, a passive note that a page changed. IndexNow is the active version of the same idea. A sitemap leaves a note for whenever the crawler reads it next. IndexNow places a call the moment something changes.

    How The Ping Works

The mechanics are simple. A site generates a key and hosts it as a small text file at the domain root. From there, it sends a URL to an IndexNow endpoint the moment that URL is created, updated, or taken down. The receiving engine can act on it right away instead of waiting on its own crawl schedule.

Microsoft and Yandex built the protocol together in 2021, and both read the pings directly. A few smaller engines, Seznam.cz and Naver among them, also participate. One ping is meant to reach every participating engine at once, so a site is not sending the same notice separately to each one.

No crawler has to come find the page first. That is the whole point of the protocol, and it is also the limit of it. A ping only tells an engine where to look. It does not tell the engine what to think once it gets there.

    Who Actually Reads It

Google's own documentation says it does not use IndexNow for Search. A page still needs Search Console, a working sitemap, and content worth crawling to get indexed there. IndexNow changes none of that.

What it changes is Bing. Bing's own index feeds Microsoft Copilot's answers directly, and any AI tool pulling live results from Bing's search API inherits whatever Bing has already indexed. Get a page into that index sooner, and it can show up in those answers sooner too.

Where The Lag Actually Costs You

A new blog post sitting unindexed for a few days rarely costs a business anything. A wrong price sitting live for a few days does.

Say a service gets discontinued, a location in Scottsdale closes, or a price changes. Until the index catches up, two versions of the truth exist at once. What the page actually says now. What a search result or an AI answer is still repeating from before.

Our post on what a rebrand does to AI visibility covers the same lag from a different trigger. A rebrand touches a dozen surfaces at once and the old name lingers everywhere engines have already stored it. IndexNow shortens that window on the Bing side specifically. It does not close it everywhere, and it never touches what Google is storing.

    What Is Worth Pinging

Not every edit needs a ping. A typo fix or a style tweak can wait for the next normal crawl. A handful of changes actually carry weight.

    • A new page going live.
    • A price, hours, or service change.
    • A page being removed or merged into another one.
    • A correction to something an AI engine has gotten wrong about the business.

Those are the moments where speed actually matters. The gap between the old answer and the new one is doing real damage while it sits open, and every day it stays open is a day a buyer can act on information that is no longer true.

What I Would Not Waste Money On

I would not pay anyone to sell "IndexNow setup" as its own project. It is a handful of lines of configuration, not a build. Most CMS platforms and a few plugins handle the ping automatically once the key is in place, and a developer can wire up the rest in under an hour.

It also will not move rankings or earn a citation a page was not already competitive enough to get. IndexNow changes how fast an engine finds the change. It does not change whether the content was worth finding in the first place, and no amount of pinging fixes a page that has nothing specific to say.

Turn it on. Do not confuse it with a strategy.

Technical signals like this one, alongside the schema, the entity consistency, and the structured data that give an engine something worth quoting, are part of what I check inside the SEO / AEO / GEO Foundation. None of it replaces the content underneath. It just gets that content in front of an engine sooner.
