Two businesses do the same AEO work. One sees movement in three weeks. The other sees nothing for four months and concludes it did not work.
Both outcomes are normal, and the reason is that AI systems obtain information about the world through two mechanisms that behave nothing alike.
Retrieval: the fast loop
Retrieval means the system goes and looks. A question arrives, the system issues searches, fetches pages, reads what it just retrieved, and composes an answer from that material, usually with citations attached.
Perplexity works this way. ChatGPT works this way when it browses. Google AI Overviews are built on live index data. Claude works this way when it has search available.
Because the fetch happens at question time, retrieval reflects the current state of your site. Repair crawlability and the next fetch sees the repair. This is the loop you can genuinely influence, and it moves in weeks rather than quarters.
What matters for retrieval is unglamorous and specific:
- The page can be fetched without executing JavaScript, or renders reliably for crawlers that do not run it.
- Crawlers are permitted rather than blocked by default.
- The answer to the question is present as text, near the top, in a passage that survives being lifted out of context.
- Facts are stated explicitly rather than implied across three paragraphs.
- The page is not one of four near-duplicates competing to represent the same thing.
Training data: the slow loop
Training data is what the model absorbed before it ever met your question. No lookup happens. The answer is produced from internalised patterns and facts.
This is why a model can describe a well-known company without searching, and why it may state something about a smaller business that was true eighteen months ago.
You cannot submit to it. There is no form. Corpora are assembled by model developers from broad crawls and licensed sources on their schedule, and any vendor offering to place your business into a training set is describing something they do not control.
What you can do is be consistently and correctly described across the open web, so that whenever the next corpus is assembled, the accurate version of your business is the version that is abundant in it.
Why this explains the timelines
The two-speed structure is the whole reason honest AEO timelines look the way they do.
- Indexing movement in weeks. Retrieval systems and classic crawlers pick up structural repair quickly.
- Local and profile results in one to two months. Profile and directory data propagates on platform schedules.
- AI answer engine visibility in three to six months. This is where corroboration accumulates and where any training-side influence begins to appear.
A vendor promising AI citations inside thirty days is describing the retrieval loop and quietly implying the training loop. A business concluding after six weeks that nothing worked is often looking at the slow loop while the fast one has already moved.
What this changes about how you write
Optimising for retrieval has a specific consequence for content: passages have to survive extraction.
A retrieval system may lift three sentences out of a page and use them without the surrounding context. If those three sentences depend on the paragraph above to make sense, they will either be skipped or reproduced in a distorted form.
So each passage should carry its own subject. Not it costs around that much, but a Starter Website from UM Media costs $1,500 to $2,000. Not we serve the area, but the studio is based in Phoenix, Arizona and works throughout the state. Dates should be explicit rather than relative, because last year is meaningless to a system reading it eleven months later.
This is the same discipline that makes a page useful to a human skimming it, which is a rare case of the machine and the reader wanting the same thing.
The practical order
Fix retrieval first. It is faster, it is controllable, and it is where commercially motivated questions increasingly get answered.
Then build the consistency and corroboration that make the slow loop eventually agree with you. That layer cannot be rushed and cannot be bought, which is also why it holds once you have it.
The UM Media SEO / AEO / GEO Foundation, from $7,500 across roughly eight weeks, targets the retrieval loop directly. Structure only. No ranking or citation guarantees.
