External links get all the attention because you have to earn them. Internal links get ignored because you can add them any time.
Which is exactly backwards, because internal links are the one part of how machines read your site that you fully control, today, for free.
Machines infer importance from structure
A crawler does not read your site the way a visitor does. It follows links. Pages that many other pages point to register as important. Pages reachable only through four clicks of navigation register as peripheral. Pages nothing links to barely register at all.
That last category has a name, orphan pages, and nearly every site we audit has them. Often the orphan is the money page: a service page that was added after the nav was designed, linked from nowhere, sitting in the sitemap like a store with no door.
Your site's link structure is a ranked list of what you think matters. Machines read it that way whether you wrote it deliberately or not.
Anchor text is a label, not a formality
The clickable words in a link describe the destination. "Click here" describes nothing. "Learn more" describes nothing. "What a cinematic brand system includes" tells both a human and a machine precisely what the next page is about, before either arrives.
Write anchors in the vocabulary buyers use, name the destination honestly, and stop wasting the one piece of text that travels with every link. This costs nothing and compounds across every page on the site.
Hubs and spokes, or why this blog links the way it does
The structure that works is old and unglamorous. A service page acts as the hub for a topic. Every post related to that topic links back to the hub, and the hub links out to the strongest posts. The cluster becomes a self-reinforcing body of work on one subject.
You are reading an example. Our posts on schema, entity consistency, AI crawler access, and answer-first writing all point back toward the same Foundation service page, and toward each other where the topics genuinely connect. That is not decoration. It is the site declaring, in machine-readable form, that these pages belong together and what they collectively cover.
What this does in AI retrieval
Answer engines crawl through links the same way classic crawlers do, but the payoff is different. When an engine retrieves content to answer a question, a tightly linked cluster surfaces as a coherent topic: the service page provides the commercial answer, the posts provide the depth, and the links between them are how the machine knows they corroborate each other.
Scattered, unlinked pages on the same topic do the opposite. They read as fragments, none individually strong enough to quote, collectively invisible.
The rules we actually apply
Every page reachable within about three clicks of the homepage. Every new post linking to at least one service page and at least two related older posts. Anchors that describe the destination in plain buyer language. Orphans found and wired in before any new content gets written. And no footer stuffed with twenty exact-match links, because a site that links like a directory reads like one.
None of this is clever. All of it is leverage, because it multiplies the value of every page you have already paid to create.
