2D Cinematic Motion Versus True Real-Time 3D
The clearest way to understand the difference is what the browser is actually doing. A cinematic 2D site is orchestrating pre-produced media, video, images, and rendered frame sequences, and animating layout and typography on top. It looks like film because it is largely playing film. A true real-time 3D site is running a scene through WebGL, calculating geometry, lighting, and camera position frame by frame, and responding to input as it happens. - Video. A continuous clip, usually muted and looping, that plays behind or beside interface elements. Efficient for atmosphere, tone, and hero sections where the visitor is not expected to steer the shot.
- Real-time WebGL. A live 3D scene the visitor can influence, whether that is orbiting a product, moving through a space, or triggering interactions. The right choice when the value is genuine interactivity, not just motion.
Choosing wrong is expensive. WebGL used where a scroll-scrub would have delivered the same feel adds cost without adding value. Video used where the story really needs interactivity leaves the visitor as a spectator when they should have been a participant.
Four Application Scenarios
Concrete cases where interactive work tends to earn its cost, framed as scenarios rather than specific client examples.
Builder or development. A residential or mixed-use development pre-sales page where visitors can move through a rendered version of the property, understand unit layouts, and see finish options in context. The interactive layer sells space that has not been built yet.
Equipment or vehicle sales. A configurator or explorer that lets visitors rotate the object, drill into components, and understand fit or specifications without waiting for a rep. The site is doing product education work that used to require a call.

What Assets An Immersive Build Requires
A realistic asset list: original ground and aerial footage produced in-house, rendered frame sequences for scroll-scrub sections, GLB or GLTF 3D models optimized for the web, textures and materials, structured copy for both the visible and semantic layers, and optional sound design for launch or entertainment builds. Scope determines how much is created inside the engagement and how much is licensed or sourced. That decision is made during scoping, not mid-build.
Performance Budgets And Graceful Degradation
An immersive build is a performance project as much as a design project. Every scene has a budget: how much data has to arrive before the first meaningful frame, and how gracefully the site behaves when the device or connection is weaker than the design assumes. A responsible build accounts for:
- Differences in GPU capability, so a scene that looks smooth on a modern machine does not stall on a five-year-old laptop.
- Progressive loading, so the visitor sees a coherent state early rather than a blank canvas.
- Image and texture compression appropriate to the target devices.
- Poster frames and fallback images, so a scene that has not finished loading is still visually complete.
- Reduced-motion preferences, so visitors who opt out of animation get a static, still-designed version.

Designed together with the visual layer, these constraints are invisible to the visitor. Ignored until the end, they become the reason the site earns a reputation for being slow.
